New New Fantasyland   6 comments

In a press release from Disney:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history is underway, a project that will nearly double the size of Fantasyland and deliver a new home for Ariel, new ways to interact with favorite Disney princesses, an exciting new family coaster, a double dose of Dumbo and more.

Scheduled to open in phases beginning in late 2012, the new Fantasyland will immerse guests in Disney stories as never before. Among the highlights planned:

Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid, a major, all-new attraction during which guests will travel with Ariel and her friends through their exciting adventures above and below the waves – all against a musical backdrop of songs from the classic film.

-The castle of the Beast, standing majestically upon a hill just across an old stone bridge from Ariel’s new home. The Be Our Guest Restaurant will feature a lavish dining experience in the elegant ballroom, gallery, and mysterious “West Wing” of the castle. With seating for 550, this magnificent facility will offer “great food fast” service by day and full table service dining in the evening. Nearby in Belle’s Village, guests will find the rousing Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts.

-Just outside the village is Belle’s cottage and Enchanted Tales with Belle. The adventure begins in Maurice’s workshop, where a magical mirror is the doorway to a captivating new kind of storytelling experience: Guests are transported to the Beast’s library to meet Belle and Lumiere, and share in a lively, interactive, re-telling of the “tale as old as time.”But that’s just the beginning of what guests will discover when the multi-phase project is completed. Here’s more of what’s in store:

NEW! The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will take guests on a rollicking, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” The coaster will feature a first-of-its kind ride system with a train of ride vehicles that swing back and forth, responding to every twist and turn of the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the classic Disney film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs.

NEW! In  Princess Fairytale Hall, Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel, will greet guests in their new home, an elegant royal court on the site where Snow White’s Scary Adventures stands today.

NEW! The sound of the calliope will lead guests to the brand new Storybook Circus and not one but two circling carousels of airborne pachyderms on Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Before taking to the skies on this Fantasyland favorite, guests can experience an array of fun-filled family games and interactive wonders for kids of all ages inside the Big Top.

NEW! Next door in Storybook Circus, the classic Barnstormer gets a bright new look as well, featuring Goofy as  The Great Goofini. It’s a twisting, turning roller coaster “flight” high above the circus fun.

That’s right everyone, Disney has released a new set of Fantasyland Expansion plans! We knew it was coming, so we shouldn’t be surprised. These newer plans call for the addition of the ever-rumored Snow White Mine Train Coaster, the ousting of Pixie Hollow, and the closure of Snow White’s Scary Adventures.

Circusland

Circusland looks to be something really cool! It’s got the Dueling Dumbos with interactive queue as planned. It’s got a new train station according to the artwork. And it even has a Casey Jr. Water Play Area!

The land is taking up all of Toontown Fair (set to close this February). In the original plans, Toontown was set to become some of Dumbo and Pixie Hollow. Early on, we heard talks that Pixie Hollow had been cut, which wasn’t a big surprise. The franchise isn’t as big as they thought. But now, Circusland is set to take up all of that space. But there really isn’t anything there!  Its a couple of big tents that, as far as we know, have nothing in them. That is enough space to give us an attraction or Meet and Greet (which will be discussed later).

“The Great Goofini” is a nice little attraction retheme. We knew that the Barnstormer would be staying and getting re-themed. The idea is nice, I like keeping it as Goofy.

Snow White Mine Train Coaster

The idea of a 7 Dwarfs Mine Coaster goes way back. It’s been rumored many many many times. When I first heard that it may be added into the expansion, I couldn’t help but laugh and take it with a grain of salt. What was next, Fire Mountain and a Villain Park? Ha!

I was never fond of the idea, either. Not because it was so common of a rumor, but because of how it was described. I had always heard that it would be a new Barnstormer kiddie coaster with minimal Snow White theming. Why would I want that? We already have a Barnstormer, and it would be such disrespect to the first animated film.

So when I first read the press release, I was a little upset. We would be getting a Mine Train Coaster. But as I looked at the consent art, I started to warm up to the idea. I still didn’t like it though. We began discussing it more and more, and as high-resolution pictures spilled out, we could see a few more details. There is one section, off on the far right, with a log. The Dwarfs on the log, just like in the film! It was at this point when I said “Yep, this is going to be cool”.  I really do think that Disney will do a good job with this. It looks very nice, and should be very fun.

Princess Fairytale Hall

Oy….Just, Oy. Now, I have no problems with them having a Meet&Greet for the princesses. In fact, I think it’s a wonderful idea that should be done. But where they are putting it bugs me.

Snow White’s Scary Adventures (SWSA) gets so much flack. It’s always blasted, called awful, outdated, and negligible. And people never give me reasons why. SWSA is one of my favorite darkrides. It seems so large, it seems fast, it’s just fun. And that’s all it needs to be: fun.  I never hear people say that Peter Pan’s Flight is fun. In fact, I hear then say how poor the condition of it is. So why hate SWSA? What’s wrong with it, and why are the other ones better than it!?

So I, the one who likes SWSA, was very upset to hear the rumors that it would be removed, especially if it was to be replaced with a Mine Train Coaster as previously mentioned. And the fact that it was going to be replaced by MnGs infuriated me. Removing another opening day darkride is one thing, but replacing it with that is outrageous! Well, now that it’s more or less set in stone that this is happening, I am very mad.

There is more than enough room to build a new MnG complex in Circusland! Why rip out an attraction when you could put a bigger complex without removing anything!? But, if they are so sure they need to rip out an attraction, they could at the very least put a new one in Circusland. I know that even if they were to do this that SWSA would have to be changed, but I’d be cool with that. We’re getting a better replacement for it with the Mine Train. But just using the space for MnG? That’s crazy.

That’s it for this time. Don’t forget to subscribe! See you all next time!

  1. Very good report! 🙂

  2. I won’t miss SWSA. And hopefully this expansion will alleviate some of the horrible overcrowding in Fantasyland. You always get bumped by a stroller when walking there b/c it’s such a narrow area and it’s where everyone with kids goes. Now if they’d only make some improvements to Adventureland.

    • I totally agree with the traffic alleviation part. This expansion will be massive (I’m sure you’ve seen how large). It will be able to suck in quite a good bit of people, not to mention the capacities of the MnGs and attractions.
      But why the SWSA hate?

As for Adventureland, I don’t know. It would be very nice to have something new in there (like Tropical Serenade…). I’m not entirely sure that a new attraction would even be able to fit. There is little to no room on the other side of the berm near AL, so expanding isn’t possible. New restaurants would be most welcome, seeing as they have 2 unused ones in AL alone. Supposedly, that Pirate eatery that is never open is rumored to be overhauled to become a POTC restaurant opened in time for Pirates 4.
I haven’t heard rumblings for AL specifiably, but rumors of a new E-tic (‘Project Z’) have started springing up today. They’re rather vague and, IMO, unlikely, regardless of source.

      And thanks, @James!

  3. I think that the Great Gofini is going to be a much better theme than the Barnstormer. And I agree about keeping Goofy as the character theme. Goofy doesn’t get enough love.

  4. Because while it is named “Scary Adventure” I think it is wrong for Disney to put such a dark and eerie ride in the middle of Fantasyland. That thing would give an adult nightmares!
And I never did like the Snow White movie either.
